What we do

The LEaD Vocational Centre provides a unique learning environment for all staff within Southern Health NHS Foundation Trust.

We offer staff pathways featuring high-quality training and work-based learning opportunities that equip them with skills that will last a lifetime.

We provide full support for learning across the organisation, with opportunities that can enhance your career whilst giving you the skills to deliver an excellent service.

We are responsible for a wide variety of vocational qualifications such as: Apprenticeships (including Higher & Degree Apprenticeships), Royal Society for Public Health (RSPH) Level 2 Award in Understanding Behaviour Change & Health Improvement, Level 3 Award in Education & Training etc. Additionally we offer a suite of 'Training Courses' for personal development.

We offer nationally recognised apprenticeships to new and existing staff to gain the knowledge, skills and competence for their role, whilst also gaining wider, transferable employability skills.

Apprenticeships are available at four levels:

  • Intermediate Apprenticeships (Level 2) - equivalent to 5 GCSEs A* - C

  • Advance Apprenticeships (Level 3) Equivalent to 2 A-Levels

  • Higher Apprenticeships (Level 4,5) Equivalent to a Foundation Degree

  • Degree Apprenticeships (Level 6,7) Equivalent to a full bachelor's or master's degree

The Care Certificate was introduced in April 2015. It is a nationally recognised training framework which assesses knowledge and competency broken down into 15 areas:

  • Understand your role
  • Personal development
  • Duty of care
  • Equality and diversity
  • Work in a person-centred way
  • Communication
  • Privacy and dignity
  • Fluids and nutrition
  • Awareness of mental health, dementia and learning disability
  • Safeguarding adults
  • Safeguarding children
  • Basic life support
  • Health and safety
  • Handling information
  • Infection prevention and control

It focuses on learning skills on the job to deliver compassionate, high quality care.

It takes no longer than twelve weeks to complete, and should not require any study outside of work and is transferable between organisations.

New staff to the Trust are automatically booked on to the Care Certificate.
